Product Description

The Italian violinist and composer Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) was very influential in both categories. As a composer, his Trio Sonatas and Concerti Grossi established a path for his students, among them Geminiani and Locatelli, and as a guide followed later by Handel in his Op. 6 Concerti Grossi. Corelli’s twelve Concerti Grossi, Op. 6, were published posthumously in 1714, the first eight designated as “da chiesa” (suitable for church performance) and the last four as “da camera” (secular). His works in this form had a solo group (the concertino) of two volins and a cello, a ripieno group of violins 1 and 2, violas, cello and continuo. Contrasting sections had the entire group (tutti) followed by the solo group, allowing for contrasting dynamics and some more technical displays by the soloists. The concerti have multiple movements, usually alternating fast and slow sections.

This arrangement for clarinet choir is by James Mack. It features two solo clarinets and a bass clarinet as the concertino. The remaining clarinet parts are the ripieno and include B-flat clarinet 1-2, alto clarinet, bass clarinet, and contra clarinet. Alternate (optional) parts have been included for Alto Clarinet (Clarinet 3 or Basset Horn), and E-flat contra-alto clarinet in place of the B-flat contrabass clarinet.
