Qi Liu was born in Bai Quian, Henan province, China in February 1936. He was born into a musical family with 8 of them eventually having careers as musicians. At the age of 11, he entered National School of Music Youth Class and studied piano and violin. After acceptance into the new Central Conservatory in Beijing, Mr. Liu studied bassoon as his major. For over half a century, Mr. Liu has played as principal bassoonist in the Central Philharmonic Orchestra and has taught bassoon in China and as a guest faculty around the world. His compositions for bassoon are widely used in China.
