Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714 -1788), a German musician and composer, was the fifth child and second (surviving) son of Johann Sebastian Bach. C.P.E. Bach's work was of great significance in the development of the style and forms of the classical school and both Mozart and Haydn were indebted to him.

The Sonata in A minor is very popular today and is played on a variety of instruments including flute, oboe, clarinet and saxophone. The work was composed during 1747, while Bach was in Berlin. Although Bach's autograph manuscript has been lost, this sonata was published during his lifetime. It appeared in an anthology, Musicalisches Mancherly, and also as a single offprint during 1763. The current edition is based on a facsimile of that first publication. Every attempt has been made to follow the original intent of the composer; however, where the markings were vague, we have made editorial decisions for clarity and consistency.
